How this assessment works
Three separate dimensions
There is no single overall score. Each stage feeds its own dimension, so strategic fit is never blended with technical capability.
- Strategic differentiation3 questions · 0–6
- Internal build readiness5 questions · 0–10
- Time pressure2 questions · 0–4
How answers are scored
No scores 0, Partly scores 1 and Yes scores 2. “Not sure” is not scored: a lack of information is not evidence that a capability or requirement is missing, so it is never treated as No.
The recommendation rules
- Internal build worth evaluating only when differentiation is at least 4, readiness at least 8, time pressure at most 2, and both long-term engineering ownership (Q4) and funded maintenance (Q8) are at least partly in place.
- Buy a specialized solution when differentiation is 2 or lower, unless owning the code is a mandatory requirement.
- Buy a foundation and tailor the workflows in other cases with differentiation of 3 or more. It is also the provisional starting point when code ownership is mandatory but build readiness is insufficient; in that case vendor feasibility must be verified first.
- The same rules apply to every workflow. The selected workflow only changes examples and wording.
Why a result can be inconclusive
With one or two “Not sure” answers, every possible value is tested. If the outcome never changes, it is shown as provisional; if it does, the result is “More information needed” and the answers that matter are highlighted. With three or more, no recommendation is shown.
Limitations
This is a practical evaluation framework built on self-reported answers. The thresholds are editorial decision aids, not statistically validated predictions. It is not an independent vendor certification, an audited readiness score, or a substitute for a detailed TCO and technical evaluation.
